Immigrants Think Twice Before Wanting to Protest

It’s a historical and tumultuous moment this week, in between COVID-19 pandemic protocols, economic hardship and recent protests against police brutality hitting all major cities daily. Each of these developments have major implications on immigrants in the US. Of note, Immigrants must pay particular attention for showing up at major protests. Everyone has the right to freedom of assembly and expression, however immigrants should also factor in the risk of protesting and getting in trouble with the law.

  1. If you are on DACA, please note criminal history is assessed at every renewal.

  2. ICE Custody- Police in several cities which are not “Sanctuary Cities” have a policy of turning people over to ICE. Once you get into ICE’s hands, it’s hard to get out.
